Your AI video editor: HyperFrames from zero

Describe the video you want in plain words and AI builds it for you. This guide takes you from an empty computer to your first finished MP4, no coding knowledge needed.

01

What HyperFrames is and what you need

HyperFrames is a free tool from HeyGen that lets an AI agent make videos for you. You write what you want, and the agent (Claude Code or Codex) builds the video and saves it as an MP4. You don't need to code: you just copy the commands in this guide.

  • A Mac or Windows computer
  • For Claude Code: a paid Claude account (Pro or higher). For Codex: a ChatGPT plan that includes the GPT-6 Astra model
  • About 30–45 minutes for the first setup
  • HyperFrames itself is free. You only pay for your Claude or ChatGPT plan

Pick one agent, Claude Code or Codex. Where you see commands for both, copy only the one for your agent.

02

Open the terminal

The terminal is a window where you type commands. Nothing to be afraid of: copy a command with the “Copy” button, paste it into the terminal and press Enter.

  • Mac: press Cmd + Space, type Terminal and press Enter. Paste with Cmd + V.
  • Windows: click Start, type PowerShell and press Enter. Paste with Ctrl + V or a right click.

While a command runs, the terminal prints text. Wait until the typing line comes back before running the next one.

03

Install Node.js and FFmpeg

Node.js runs HyperFrames, and FFmpeg turns the finished video into an MP4 file.

Mac: first install Homebrew, an “app store” for the terminal. It will ask for your Mac password. Nothing shows while you type it, and that's normal. At the end Homebrew prints Next steps with two commands: copy and run them, then move on to step 2.

Mac · 1. Homebrew
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
Mac · 2. Node.js and FFmpeg
brew install node ffmpeg
Windows · 1. Node.js
winget install OpenJS.NodeJS.LTS
Windows · 2. FFmpeg
winget install --id Gyan.FFmpeg -e

Close the terminal, open it again and check that everything is there:

Check · Node.js
node -v
Check · FFmpeg
ffmpeg -version

Node.js should show v22 or higher (e.g. v24.11.0). If you see “command not found” or “not recognized”, check Common errors at the bottom.

04

Install your agent: Claude Code or Codex

The agent is an AI that works on your computer: it writes files and runs commands for you. Install just one.

Claude Code · Mac
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
Claude Code · Windows
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
Codex · Mac and Windows
npm install -g @openai/codex

Then type claude or codex and press Enter. A browser opens so you can sign in: with your Claude account for Claude Code, or click Sign in with ChatGPT for Codex. Once signed in, leave the agent: type /exit or press Ctrl + C twice.

05

Make a folder for your videos

All your video projects live in one folder. Create it and go into it:

Mac and Windows · 1
mkdir my-videos
Mac and Windows · 2
cd my-videos

From now on, whenever you work on videos, open the terminal and type cd my-videos first.

06

Install HyperFrames

Now you teach your agent how to make videos. Run the commands for your agent, then the check, which is the same for both.

Claude Code · 1
claude plugin marketplace add heygen-com/hyperframes
Claude Code · 2
claude plugin install hyperframes@hyperframes
Codex
npx hyperframes skills update
Check · both
npx hyperframes doctor

doctor checks that everything is ready. If it flags an error, read what it says and see Common errors at the bottom.

07

Start your agent with the best settings

The model is the agent's “brain”, and effort is how long it thinks before answering. For video, pick the strongest model and set effort to High.

The top levels (xhigh, Max, Ultra) burn through your limits much faster and are slower. For making videos, High gives the best balance of quality and speed.

Claude Code: Opus on High
claude --model opus --effort high
Codex · 1. start it
codex
Codex · 2. type inside the agent
/model

For Codex: after /model, pick gpt-6-astra, then choose High for effort.

08

Describe your brand to the agent

For every video to use your colours, fonts and tone of voice, the agent needs to know who you are. That's what the frame.md file is for: exact colours and fonts at the top, and below them how your brand sounds and what it never does.

You don't have to write it yourself. Download the PDF, copy the big prompt inside and paste it to your agent. It will ask you one question at a time and create frame.md for you at the end.

If you have a logo, put it in the my-videos/assets folder first, ideally as an SVG or a PNG with no background.

Download PDF: brand prompt
09

Make your first video

Paste this message to your agent and replace the link with your own website:

Claude Code
Using /hyperframes:hyperframes, make a 10-second intro video for https://your-site.com. Take colours, fonts and tone from frame.md.
Codex
Use $hyperframes to make a 10-second intro video for https://your-site.com. Take colours, fonts and tone from frame.md.

The agent will ask permission to install packages and start a preview: approve it. For a longer video it first offers three storylines for you to pick from.

10

Preview and save the MP4

When it's done, the agent opens a preview in your browser. Watch the video and ask for changes in plain words in the same chat, for example “make the text bigger” or “cut it to 8 seconds”.

When you like it, tell the agent “render the video to MP4”, or run this yourself in the project folder:

Save as MP4
npx hyperframes render --output final.mp4
Reopen the preview later
npx hyperframes preview
?

Common errors

“command not found” or “not recognized” (node, claude, codex, ffmpeg)

Close the terminal and open it again, since new programs only show up in a new window. On Mac, make sure you ran the two commands Homebrew printed under Next steps.

Windows: “running scripts is disabled on this system”

PowerShell blocks scripts by default, including npx. Run Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope CurrentUser RemoteSigned, confirm with Y and try again.

“FFmpeg not found”

FFmpeg is missing or the terminal can't see it. Repeat step 3, open a new terminal, check with ffmpeg -version, then run npx hyperframes doctor.

The agent doesn't know about HyperFrames

Leave the agent and start it again. In Claude Code you can also type /reload-plugins. For Codex, run npx hyperframes skills check.

Rendering the MP4 fails

Run npx hyperframes doctor in the project folder and do what it reports. If you don't understand the message, paste it to your agent and ask it to fix it.

How much does it cost?

HyperFrames is free and open source. You only pay for your Claude or ChatGPT plan, and each video uses part of its limits.

This guide follows the official HyperFrames documentation (hyperframes.heygen.com), November 2026. Commands may change over time.

No time for this?

We'll make the video for you, or set up a whole video content system that matches your brand.
